You may have heard of the DARPA Challenges, in which the US Department of Defense awarded prizes for the best autonomous cars navigating in desert or urban environments.
Now the UK's Ministry of Defence has held its own robotics competition, the UK Grand Challenge, focused on the best way to detect military threats in an urban environment. Unlike the DARPA Challenges entries were not restricted to autonomous cars. The winning team used a swarm of flying robots in combination with a single tank-like robot on the ground to explore a mock village while looking out for hidden snipers, armed enemies in the open and roadside bombs.
