Adam, the Robot Scientist

Adam, the Robot Scientist

Scientists at Aberystwyth University have created an artificially intelligent machine dubbed "Adam, the robot scientist". According to their paper published in Science, the laboratory robot autonomously generated hypotheses about the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae or baker's yeast, and experimentally confirmed these hypotheses using laboratory automation. As the authors point out,

... the basis of science is the hypothetico-deductive method, and the recording of experiments in sufficient detail to enable reproducibility.

As confirmed by additional, "manual" experiments without the robot, Adam has become the first machine to discover novel scientific knowledge. The researchers are now working on a second generation machine, named Eve, that they hope will be much more efficient than Adam.
