"Roboat" to become maritime sensor

Postby Markus Waibel on 19 Nov 2010, 09:13

Researchers at the Austrian Society for Innovative Computer Sciences and Oregon State University are developing an autonomous sailboat to act as a maritime research platform. The robotic sailboat is based on the Autonomous Sailing Vehicle or ASV "Roboat", which won this year's World Robotic Sailing Championship in Canada.

The fully automated boat will be equipped with sensors for passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals without disturbances by noise created by the motors and propellers of motorized boats. A potential further application of the Roboat technology are intelligent, moving sensor buoys for reconnaissance and surveillance.
