Researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology KIST have developed a new household assistant robot. The Mahru-Z improves on an earlier prototype moving on wheels and is a humanoid standing about 1.3 meters tall and weighing 55 kg. According to a press release, the robot is equipped with stereoscopic vision and can autonomously recognize tasks and execute them. Examples include turning on microwave ovens, washing machines and toasters, as well as picking up sandwiches or cups. The development of Mahru-Z is one of Korea's key research projects in the field of "cognitive humanoids", with a total yearly budget of around 4 billion won (3.5 million USD or 2.5 million Euros).
