Researchers at the University of Michigan have created an artificial foot for amputees that recycles energy currently wasted in between steps.

The advanced prosthetic uses a combination of springs and clutches controlled by a microcontroller to reduce the almost 25 percent energy penalty amputees incur with conventional prosthetic feet. The new foot is currently being tested on amputees and a commercial device is on its way.
