French service robotics company Robosoft has developed a new robot to assist elderly and disabled persons. The Kompaï robot can move autonomously move around the house and return to its charging station using its wheeled base and can take commands via a touchscreen or voice recognition interface. A first demonstration shows a man talking to the robot, telling it to remind him of a meeting, add items to a shopping list or play music. Using an integrated camera, screen and internet connection, the robot also acts as a video conferencing system.
The first version of Kompaï is intended for developers who want to implement their own robotics application for assistance of dependent persons. The company is currently working on extending the robots functionalities to include visual object and gesture recognition as well as adding a robot arm to perform more practical functions.
